Standard gold coins are great for buying basic mushrooms and standard armor, but if you want to break Super Mario RPG wide open, you need to focus your attention on a much rarer currency. Frog Coins are the key to unlocking some of the most overpowered accessories in the game.

Whether you are a newcomer playing the Nintendo Switch remake or a veteran returning to your SNES roots, here is your definitive guide to understanding, farming, and spending Frog Coins.

What Are Frog Coins?

Frog Coins are a special, green-colored premium currency featuring a tiny frog face. Unlike regular coins, you will not find these dropping from every standard Goomba. They are typically hidden inside invisible Surprise Boxes, awarded by defeating special glowing enemies (in the Switch remake), or given as prizes for mastering the game’s various minigames.

You can spend this currency at two exclusive vendors: the two tadpole merchants hiding on the left side of Tadpole Pond, and the Frog Coin Emporium located on the second floor of the elder's house in Seaside Town (once the town is liberated).

The Best Minigames and Methods for Farming

If you want to buy the best items, finding a few Frog Coins in hidden blocks will not be enough. You need a reliable farming route. Here are the three most efficient methods in the game:

1. The Paratroopa Cliff at Land's End (The Fastest Method)

This is by far the most efficient, albeit skill-intensive, way to farm Frog Coins.

  • The Setup: Progress through Land's End until you meet Sergeant Flutter and his squad of Paratroopas. They will form a staircase of flying shells for you to scale the cliff.
  • The Method: You are timed on how fast you can jump from shell to shell to reach the summit. If you can reach the top in under 11 seconds, Sergeant Flutter will reward you with a massive 5 Frog Coins.
  • The Grind: Once you memorize the jumping rhythm, you can consistently clear the cliff in under 11 seconds, netting you dozens of Frog Coins in just a few minutes. Even if you clock in between 11 and 11.49 seconds, you still get 1 Frog Coin.

2. The Midas River Waterfall (The Easy, Consistent Method)

If you struggle with the precise platforming required at the Paratroopa Cliff, this is your stress-free alternative.

  • The Setup: Return to the Midas River course.
  • The Method: During the first half of the minigame (the waterfall descent), you will fall past various coins. If you time your horizontal movements to hit the green Koopa shells, you can bounce back up and grab the Frog Coins suspended in the air.
  • The Grind: You can reliably snag a few Frog Coins per run. It is slower than the cliff jump, but it requires much less technical skill and is completely risk-free.

3. The 10-Bounce Combat Trick (The Passive Method)

You do not actually have to play a minigame to farm; you can do it right in standard combat!

  • The Setup: Equip Mario with the Super Jump special attack.
  • The Method: Engage any enemy (Spikeys in Mushroom Way or Goombas in Bandit's Way work perfectly). Use Super Jump and successfully time your button presses to bounce on the enemy's head 10 times or more in a single attack.
  • The Grind: Every time you execute 10 or more consecutive jumps in combat, you are guaranteed to be rewarded with 1 Frog Coin at the end of the battle. If you have mastered the Super Jump timing, you can farm these passively while grinding for EXP.

What to Buy: The Best Frog Coin Accessories

Do not waste your green gold on minor consumables. Save up for these game-changing accessories:

  • Exp. Booster (Cost: 22 Frog Coins at Tadpole Pond):
    • What it does: Doubles the amount of Experience Points earned in battle for the character wearing it.
    • Why you need it: If you want to hit the level cap of 30 quickly to prepare for the post-game boss rematches, this is mandatory. Equip it on a character, watch them level up twice as fast, and then rotate it to the next party member.
  • Flower Ring (Cost: 50 Frog Coins at Tadpole Pond):
    • What it does: Cuts the Flower Point (FP) cost of all special moves and magic spells in half during combat.
    • Why you need it: This is arguably the best accessory for Princess Peach or Mallow. Halving the cost of Peach's Group Hug or Mallow's Snowy means you can spam your most powerful spells and heals without constantly stopping to drink Syrups.
  • Coin Trick (Cost: 36 Frog Coins at Tadpole Pond):
    • What it does: Doubles the standard gold coins earned from battles.
    • Why you need it: If you are trying to buy the Fireworks in Moleville to unlock the Culex boss fight, or stocking up on expensive healing items, this pays for itself very quickly.

Master the Paratroopa Cliff, hoard your Frog Coins, and purchase the Exp. Booster and Flower Ring as soon as possible. With those tools in your arsenal, the Smithy Gang will not stand a chance.
