A step-by-step guide to solving Toadofsky's first musical puzzle at Tadpole Pond, earning the Alto Card, and unlocking powerful party-wide healing items at the Juice Bar.

While navigating the quirky world of Super Mario RPG, keeping your party healthy during boss fights is crucial. Relying solely on standard Mushrooms or Princess Peach's FP-draining spells can leave you vulnerable. Thankfully, Tadpole Pond hides a secret economy: the Juice Bar. To access its exclusive, party-wide healing drinks, you need to prove your musical prowess to a famous composer and earn a series of membership cards.

Here is exactly how to compose Toadofsky's first masterpiece, claim the Alto Card, and give your party a massive survivability upgrade.

Step 1: Locating Melody Bay and Toadofsky

  1. Progress through the early game until you unlock Tadpole Pond on your world map.
  2. Upon entering the area and speaking with the Frog Sage, head to the right side of the pond.
  3. You will enter a new screen called Melody Bay. Here, you will find a musical staff painted on the water and meet the frantic, creatively blocked composer, Toadofsky.
  4. To help him out, you must jump on the tadpoles swimming across the pond, stopping them on the correct lines of the musical staff to form a specific melody.

Step 2: Playing the Exact Melody

The song Toadofsky is looking for is "Frog Sage's Suite #18" (originally known as Frogfucius' Suite #18 on the SNES). You can technically learn the notes by reading the sign behind the Frog Sage, but you can also input them directly if you know the combination.

The musical staff lines in Melody Bay represent the following notes from top to bottom: Mi, Re, Do, Ti, La, So, Fa.

To play the correct melody, wait for the tadpole to swim to the correct vertical position and jump on it. You need to input these exact eight notes in order:

  1. So (The 6th line down from the top)
  2. La (The 5th line down from the top)
  3. Mi (The very top line)
  4. Re (The 2nd line down from the top)
  5. Do (The 3rd line down from the top)
  6. Re (The 2nd line down from the top)
  7. Do (The 3rd line down from the top)
  8. Re (The 2nd line down from the top)

Once you jump on the final note, Toadofsky will be overjoyed by the composition. A brief cutscene will play where he thanks you for the inspiration, and he will reward you with the Alto Card.

The Juice Bar: Upgrades and Items Unlocked

Now that you have the Alto Card in your inventory, head back to the main area of Tadpole Pond and walk all the way to the left side. You will find two tadpoles running the Juice Bar. Before you had the card, they refused to sell you anything. Now, as a recognized member, you can purchase two incredibly useful items using regular coins.

Here is what the Alto Card unlocks and the benefits these items provide to your team:

  • Froggie Drink (Known as "Tadpola Cola" in the SNES original): * The Upgrade: This item restores 30 HP to your entire active party at once.
    • Why it's great: In the early game, standard Mushrooms only heal a single target. The Froggie Drink functions as an emergency "Group Hug" spell without forcing you to spend valuable Flower Points (FP) or requiring Peach to be in your active party.
  • Elixir (Known as "Frogleg Cola" in the SNES original):
    • The Upgrade: This premium item restores a massive 80 HP to your entire active party at once.
    • Why it's great: This is a mid-game lifesaver. When bosses start using area-of-effect (AoE) magical attacks that damage your whole team simultaneously, popping a single Elixir immediately resets the fight in your favor, bringing almost everyone back to full health instantly.

Securing the Alto Card is just the beginning of your musical career. As you progress through the game to places like Moleville and Monstro Town, be sure to keep an ear out for new melodies to upgrade to the Tenor and Soprano cards for even better Juice Bar items!
