Filling up Shin Chan’s Summer Diary is not just about eating snacks and fighting toy dinosaurs; it requires patience, a quick net, and a very keen eye. In Shin Chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation, catching rare bugs goes beyond the personal satisfaction of completing your encyclopedia. Snagging the rarest specimens generates the most sensational headlines for Cap's local newspaper and helps you earn Yen much faster.

Grab your straw hat and your bug net. Here is your ultimate entomology guide to catching the kings of the Japanese summer in Asso.

The Technique: "Spamming" and Observation

Catching bugs in this game requires two very different approaches, depending on what you are hunting.

  • The Constant Sweep (Spamming): This is your bread and butter for filling the lower ranks of your encyclopedia. As you run through town, constantly press the bug net button. Many insects—like ants, ladybugs, and small grasshoppers—are practically invisible in the tall grass. By blindly swinging as you run, you will scoop up dozens of hidden bugs without even trying.
  • Observing the Environment: For the top-tier insects, you need to slow down. Train your eyes to look at the backgrounds rather than Shin Chan. Focus on tree trunks, wooden fences, and large patches of flowers. The most valuable beetles and butterflies will sit perfectly static, blending into the painted backgrounds with incredible camouflage. If you see a weird dark pixel on a tree, approach it slowly and swing!

The Time Factor: Day vs. Evening

The fauna in Asso changes dramatically depending on the time of day. If you are looking for a specific bug, you need to know when it comes out of hiding.

  • Morning and Midday: The sun brings out the noisy flyers. This is the perfect time to catch the endless varieties of Cicadas (which sound different but look very similar on the trees), fast-moving Dragonflies hovering over the water, and colorful daytime Butterflies.
  • Late Afternoon and Evening: This is when the heavyweights come out to play. You must manage your energy with snacks so you can stay out as the sun sets. The evening brings glowing Fireflies near the water and, most importantly, the massive, highly coveted horned beetles on the tree trunks.

Hot Zones: Where to Hunt the Best Specimens

Do not wander aimlessly. Divide the map into biomes to target exactly what you need:

  • The Farm and Crop Fields: The grassy areas around the Kurokami farm are the ideal habitat for jumping insects. Spend time here to catch rare Praying Mantises, Stink Bugs, and various types of Crickets and Grasshoppers.
  • The Bridge and Riverbanks: Any screen with running water is a goldmine for airborne bugs. During the day, you will find the most valuable Dragonflies zipping around. At sunset, this is the only place to catch Fireflies.
  • The Deep Forest and Secret Base: These areas are locked at the beginning of the game and open up as you progress through the Professor's dinosaur tasks. Once inside, check every ancient tree and wooden stump. This is where the absolute rarest, end-game bugs reside.

The Top Tier: The Most Wanted Insects

If you want to be the ultimate bug catcher, these are the prestigious targets you should be looking for to achieve 100% completion:

  • The Hercules Beetle, Stag Beetle, and Atlas Beetle: The undisputed kings of the summer. These massive beetles are the crown jewels of your collection. They spawn almost exclusively on specific trees during the late afternoon and evening, usually in the later days of the time loop. Approach them carefully, as missing your swing will scare them away.
  • Rare Butterflies (like the Swallowtail): These require the fastest reflexes in the game. Unlike beetles that wait for you, rare butterflies flutter across the screen dynamically. If you don't catch them quickly, they will fly off-screen. Worse, if you try to chase them, you might accidentally trigger a screen transition and lose them forever.

What to Do with Your Collection (The Rewards)

So, you have a pocket full of legendary beetles. What now?

First, every new catch gets permanently recorded in your Encyclopedia, ticking up your completion percentage. Second, taking these rare bugs to the Newspaper Office guarantees a "star" article. A headline about a Hercules Beetle will skyrocket Cap’s newspaper subscriptions overnight, resulting in massive daily bonuses for Shin Chan. Finally, always check the Kurokami Restaurant Bulletin Board. Yoshiko will frequently post bounties for specific bugs. If you turn in the exact insect she is looking for, she will pay you a small fortune in Yen, keeping you well-supplied with Chocobi for the rest of your vacation.
